Boggia: Pittsburgh, PA / Phillies game

No Comments 30 July 2005

CLUB CAFE - PITTSBURGH, PA - FRIDAY, 8.5.05 - 7p
I’ll be playing a headlining slot at Club Cafe in Pittsburgh on Friday, 8.5.05 at 7p. Pittsburgh is one of those cities on the cusp for me - I’ve got a bit of a toehold, but I still need to find a way to build up my audience. So, feel free to spread this list of facts with anyone you know in Pittsburgh:
* My favorite actor portraying Batman in feature films? Michael Keaton.
* I once traded two Mickey Stanley’s and a Catfish Hunter to get one Roberto Clemente.
* I’ve always felt good in buildings made with steel girders.
* I think the pianist on Mister Rogers Neighborhood is a genius.
If they’re still on the fence, you can mention that I hate Cleveland*.

SEVENTH INNING STRETCH - PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES - SUNDAY, 8.7.05 - 1:35p
Baseball ben berry, berry gud to mee. Helen Leicht of WXPN has worked out this incredibly cool situation where I get to play “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” at the Phladelphia Phillies game on Sunday, 8.7.05.?
I’ve worked up a guitar version of Paul Richardson’s (the official organist of the Phillies) arrangement and I’ll be playing atop the 3rd base dugout during the seventh inning stretch. I can’t wait to hear everyone singing along.
You can be part of the crowd mentioned in the second line of the aforementioned waltz by getting tickets - consider seats on the third base side - at?www.philadelphiaphillies.com.
There’s a discount for XPN members, check out www.xpn.org for details.
I’ll also be playing a set AFTER THE GAME at McFadden’s (at the third base entrance), so stop in and say hello.
A big thanks to WXPN and Helen Leicht for arranging this.?

XPN’s All About the Music - WBJB’s Songwriter’s in the Park - JimBoggia.com gets vlogged

WXPN’s ‘ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC’ FESTIVAL - SATURDAY, 7.23.05 - 3p:
This weekend WXPN is throwing their annual shindig, and this year they’ve re-named after my life beginning when I was four years old:
All About the Music
They were kind enough to ask me to play and to bring along the boys in the band (Mike Frank - Keys, Roger Cox - Drums, Pete Donnelly - Bass, Ron Jennings - Guitar). And even after finding out that “All About the Music” was not only the name of the festival, but also a euphemism for “you’re not getting paid”, we’re still itching to do it, because:
* Outdoor festivals are a great opportunity to turn my amp up past its indoor setting of 4.
* No walls to reflect sound helps to achieve the dry, ‘Revolver” sound I love so much.
* Sweating onstage helps me shed pounds and maintain my hourglass figure.
* I love playing with this band.
* WXPN ben berry berry gud to mee.
Hope to see a whole bunch of you there, posing as small colored dots in front of my failing eyes. We hit the main stage at 3p and play until we’re finished, ‘cuz it’s . . .?ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC.

APPEARANCE ON ‘CN8 THIS MORNING’ IN PHILADELPHIA - FRIDAY, 7.22.05 - 9a:
As a promo for WXPN’s All About the Music Festival, I’ll be appearing with XPN’s Michaela Majoun on ‘CN8 This Morning’ on Friday, 7.22.05 at 9a (they tell me that’s in the morning).
I just bought a new pair of rabbit ears for my telly (no really, I did) - so I don’t know nuthin’ ’bout no cable TV. They tell me there’s more than 4 channels now, and the CN8 is one of them. I don’t know how you get it, or where you “tune in”, as all the kids say now, but if you have cable, these things are probably self-evident.
It is always entertaining to see a musician attempt to perform in the morning. Worth tuning in just for that.

WBJB’s SONGWRITER’S IN THE PARK SERIES - WEDNESDAY, 7.27.05 - 7p?
I just came across a bootleg of some early Chicago demos. It was kinda spooky when I heard the original version:
Songwriters (wee-doo)
in the Park (wee-doo)
I think it was the twenty seventh of July.
After hearing that I was so freaked out, but in a really good way.?
Wow, I think I’ve out insided myself. For a diagram of the above paragraph and why it could potentially be considered funny, or at least clever, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to? . . . ah, never mind.
Anyway, a solo acoustic show for a great station spreading the Boggia gospel.?

By the way, “wee-doo” was supposed to signify the horn part.

NEW AT JIMBOGGIA.COM - THE BLOG BECOMES A VLOG
(Translation: VIDEOS ON THE WEBSITE - CHECK THE ‘I SPOUT OFF’ PAGE):

If you have no idea what the above title means, don’t sweat it - two days ago I was in the same boat. “Vlog” is the latest in the never ending stream of new terms to learn thanks to our friend, Technology. And while a lot of times Technology is like the friend you have who is great to be around until about the fourth drink, at which point he becomes unbearable and tries to steal your girlfriend all while hitting you up for 20 bucks, this time Technology is like our old friend from college who comes to tell you that he has an incurable disease, but he also got out of the NASDAQ just before the bubble burst and he’s decided to leave you the majority of his vast wealth as a way of making up for that time back in college when he got drunk, became unbearable, stole your girlfriend and borrowed 20 bucks from you that he never paid back.
Or something like that.
Vlogging is video blogging. If you’re not sure what blogging is, he’s like your Cousin Louie who . . . look man, Google “blogging” if you don’t know, I’m not teaching a class.
Anyway, for those of you who’ve ever wondered “what happens to all that video I see Mary shooting all the time?”, the answerer is: It sits in a drawer waiting for somebody to invent vlogging. Since that part is now covered, it gets put up on my website as blog (excuse me, vlog) entries for everyone to enjoy.
First installment is a clip from the very last show at The Point - an impromptu version of ‘Helter Skelter’ that was pretty on the mark.
You can get to it here.
Click on the screen shot and turn up the volume.
Check it out and TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK. You can leave comments here.
For those of you on the cutting edge, you can subscribe to my blog’s feed by entering??”http://feeds.feedburner.com/JimBoggia” (without the quotation marks) into your favorite media aggregator.
The really frightening thing is I actually understand what I just typed.
ONE LAST THING:
If all this tech mumbo-jumbo DOESN’T scare you, and you’re really into it and understand it really well, please drop me a line at jim@jimboggia.com, there may be a position on TeamBoggia waiting for you (probably shortstop).
Can Boggia Podcasts be far behind?
Actually, no. But check out the video first.
Peace,
Jim

Hey Everybody,
They say that the man who coined the phrase “Go West, young man” actually stayed in the East and made a ton of money, but since I didn’t find that out until very recently, I’ve got another trip out west planned. Here’s the skinny on the shows:
THE HARD ROCK CAFE - LOS ANGELES, CA - SATURDAY, 7.9.05:
After a long flight from Philadelphia, I’m going to be hungry. So why not kick off this West Coast swing with a gig at the Hard Rock Cafe, where I can grab one of their world famous burgers to fuel my rock and roll dreams? On top of that, there’s the?memorabilia - and while maybe not of the same caliber as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s, Boy George’s hair ribbons from the ‘I’ll Tumble 4 You’ video are more impressive when you see them up close than you might first imagine.
Besides, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame can’t make a decent burger.
I go on at 10p, after a brief dedication ceremony for my last pair of Chuck Taylor’s, which will be going into a display case in the employee’s washroom.

THE HOTEL CAFE - LOS ANGELES, CA - TUESDAY, 7.12.05:
The Hotel Cafe is fast becoming one of my favorite venues on the West Coast.?
Wait . . . yep, now it IS my favorite venue on the West Coast. That WAS fast!
On Tuesday, 7.12.05 at 9p I’ll be back for a solo set that may not be so solo (I may have a guest or two) and will almost definitely not be so-so (if I have anything to say about it).?
But come early, because at 8p, Jill Sobule and I get on either side of our friend Marykate O’Neil and accompany her for her set. We will rehearse songs from Marykate’s new upcoming album, but she may call out entirely different tunes when we actually play. Do not be alarmed. The difference between us knowing the tunes and not knowing the tunes is not as great as you might think.
Marykate plays perky, perfect pop tunes that average about 2 minutes each separated by absurdist, dada-esque introductions to the songs that average about 5 minutes each. You’ll tap your foot. You’ll scratch your head. You will ask questions which will not be answered.
After an intermission of sufficient length to quell the voices in your head (I suggest you do a shot)? . . .?
I will perform the latest version of my traveling minstrel show at 9p.??
I play sometimes perky pop tunes of no fixed length with imperfections that reflect the very nature of our modern times, interspersed with clever witticisms that recall a bygone era (McCarthy). You’ll tap your foot. You’ll rub your tummy. Answers will magically appear to you for questions you were not aware you had asked, but Marykate’s set will still remain a mystery.
This?WILL be the unofficial West Coast Record Release Party - and since there’s no Official West Coast Release Party, there’s no need to RSVP (just have some extra cash in hand to buy your copy of ‘Safe in Sound’).

THE SHOWBOX - SEATTLE, WA - WEDNESDAY, 7.13.05:
Let me let you in on a little secret. I am not as well known in Seattle as say, Kurt Cobain. In fact, I am not as well known in Seattle as even?Flora Parhizgari, former MTV College Stringer who, as far as I can tell, isn’t really known in Seattle at all.
So, I’m hoping any of my friends and fans out there who know folks in the Seattle area will ask them to come out on Wednesday, 7.13.05 at 9p for my very first Seattle show at The Showbox. I’ll be sharing the bill with?Kristin Connell, who is almost certain to be more well known in Seattle than me. With your help, we can change that.
I’m sorry, that was mean. I got carried away.
