‘Beatles by Boggia’ - 9.02.09 - World Cafe Live

No Comments 28 August 2009

Greetings Beatle Peedles,

A quick blast about what should be a very cool, unique night of Fab and Gear entertainment.

WEDNESDAY, 9.02.09 - 7P
BEATLES BY BOGGIA (45TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BEATLES’ 1ST PHILLY SHOW)
WORLD CAFE LIVE - PHILADELPHIA, PA

September 2, 1964 - The Beatles’ 1st Philly show takes place at the Philadelphia Convention Center

  • Tickets were 5 bucks.
  • There were probably about 17 other acts on before they played.
  • Hy Lit (note the initials) asked them to come play at the Convention Center. He also hosted.
  • The Beatles’ set wasn’t more than about about a half an hour.
  • They were paid $25k.

September 2, 2009 - The ‘Beatles by Boggia’ takes place at World Cafe Live

  • Tickets are 15 bucks (plus a nominal service fee - life is so much better now).
  • Larry Kane will talk about his time traveling with and interviewing the Beatles on their first tour (and beyond) and Denny Somach will present a bunch of his fab memorabilia (including the only footage of the Beatles’ performance that night in ‘64) before I play.
  • Helen Leicht (note the initials) asked me to come play at World Cafe Live. She’s also hosting, which is what you’d expect from the woman who invented the Breakfast with the Beatles format.
  • I’m playing the same set The Beatles played and it STILL won’t be more than about about a half an hour.
  • I’m being paid $25k.

At least one of these things isn’t true (Hint: it’s not the set length) but it WILL be a great evening of music and Fab memories.

If you were at the Beatles’ show 45 years ago and bring your ticket stub, WCL will give you a free drink. If you have been at ANY of my shows in the past and bring your ticket stub, I’ll let you buy me a drink.

Oh yeah - and there’s a special English pub-style menu that night. I’m hoping for Sunday Roast with Yorkshire Pud (but I’m not cookin’, so I can’t promise).

One and Only August Show

THURSDAY, 8.13.09 - 7P
CENTER CITY PHILLY HOUSE CONCERT WITH ZACH DJANIKIAN
FUNDRAISER FOR FALL EUROPEAN TOUR

In Europe they take the month of August off. I’ve decided to be all European this year and don’t have any official shows on the books this month. But as I was looking at my empty August calendar feeling the shiftlessness that has made Europe what it is today, I thought “man, I gotta play some shows in Europe.”

Seems my friend Zach Djanikian from The Brakes was feeling it, too (the playing shows in Europe thing, not the shiftless thing. Well, okay, maybe some of the shiftless thing). Anyway, Zach and I are embarking on a 2-3 week tour playing shows in the UK, France, Switzerland and perhaps even Germany in September. To make it happen, a very cool non-profit organisation (that’s the European spelling) called The Philadelphia Sessions has organised (because what better thing for an organisation to do?) a house concert to help raise funds to help offset the travel costs.

Here’s a few words about The Philadelphia Sessions from their website:

“(The Philadelphia Sessions) establishes relationships with other international cities and raises funds to send local musicians to perform as ambassadors of Philadelphia. We also host musicians from abroad and help them showcase here in our area.”

I can get behind that. If you can now get behind me getting behind them, we’re pretty close to a conga line - and who doesn’t love a conga line?

This will be an intimate house concert with Zach and I each doing a set as well as playing some songs together. We’ve just started playing on each other’s tunes and doing some spontaneous covers and it has been a treat. Those of you who have attended any of my house concerts in the past know that there is something a little different and special about them from the shows at clubs and I know having the duo thing will bring even more to the party.

So, come to the party, okay?
